Saint Bridget of Sweden

In winter 2010 my former school - Tallinn School No 21 - invited me to give a history lesson to high school students.

There is a tradition in Estonia that recent graduates give classes at their former schools after a few years of leaving the school. I decided to talk about Saint Bridget of Sweden. She is considered by some to be the first feminist of Europe. After her husband's death she travelled to Rome where she succeeded in founding the Bridgettine order. In 1412 a Bridgettine cloister and church was opened in the vicinity of Tallinn. When I was a kid growing up in Pirita (the name derives from Bridget), the ruins of this place, was one of my favourite playgrounds, so it was nice to revisit this memory.
